In A. W. Tozer’s book The Purpose of Man, chapter 13 on page 167, the author states, “According to the Bible, a local church exists to do corporately what each Christian should do individually all week: namely, worship God and show forth the excellencies of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
In chapter 9 on page 143 of The Great Commission to Worship, Wheeler and Whaley state, “The mandate (of the church) is to go into all of the world and make fully devoted followers of Christ.”
On the surface these 2 statements contradict one another. Which is the most important mandate of the church, evangelism, or worship? Do they co-exist as equal, yet separate disciplines? Is evangelism a product of worship? Is worship a prerequisite to evangelism, or is evangelism a prerequisite to worship?
Based on your study of chapters 12–13 of The Purpose of Man, and your study of chapters 9–11 of The Great Commission to Worship, discuss the questions raised in the preceding paragraph. Include in your discussion at least 2 citations from each book.
